When Socrates Meets Confucius

"An individual's greatness cannot be judged objectively by his or her contemporaries; the most objective evaluators of a person's greatness are people who belong to a later time."

I agree that it is more appropriate to judge a individual's greatness by the people who belongs to a later time instead of the contemporaries, for the people in the same time will greatly constrained by the contemporary politics and culture, while the great man's works and ways of thinking always exceed the time .It is more fair to judge an individual later because the later people have get rid of the influence of the time and see things in a more balanced view .

The critics made by the contemporaries are always greatly influenced by the conditions of politics and popularity of that time. For example, the outstanding poet, William Wordsworth ,wrote many poem concerning the scenes and events of everyday life and speech of ordinary people. He believed the topic of ordinary people was the raw material of which poetry could and should be made, while his poem was nothing in the eyes of the mainstream of poets, who put much emphasis on the form of the poem. Yet , the poem of William Wordsworth is highly evaluated nowadays, which is of strong emotions instead of rich forms .

All great man are not god ,and they may make mistakes when they are young ,which may lead to unfair critism when the contemporaries only see one profile of the great man ,or greatly constrained by the standard of morality of the time. For instance ,George Gorden Byron'wife left him just after a year's marriage ,then rumors about his innocent relationship with his sister and doubts about his sanity were everywhere, which lead to his left of England and never came back. For a long time ,England greatly discriminated the poet as a devil poet .Byron was refused to be burried with his poet peers when he died until the prejudice against him disappeared many years later. As we can see, many famous men's behaviour defied the traditions and cultures of the time ,while it has a meaning of  progress. People who in the later time can make a banlanced view in a long term view, which can give a more fair criticism despite the pejudice and narrow views of the contemporary.

I am totally in favor of judging a individual's greatness by later people . Critics made by the contemporaries are always greatly influenced by the conditions of politics, popularity and the conventions .The great men make mistakes ,though they are outstanding people .The contemporaries may only  see one profile of the great man ,thus unfair ciritism is born. The people of a later time, with a long term view, can have a more banlanced view and fairly anylyse the different aspects of an individual without prejudice.

I agree it is more appropriate to judge an individual’s greatness by those of a later era, instead of his contemporaries. This is mainly because those of the same period might be more constrained by contemporary politics and culture, while the individual’s works and ways of thinking might exceed his time. It is more fair to judge a person later, because those of a subsequent time will not be unfairly influenced by the current times, and will see things in a more balanced view.

I am in agreement that an individual’s great eminence is more appropriately judged by those of a later era than by his contemporaries. To clarify, those of the likewise period might be more constrained by existing politics and culture, whereas the individual’s works and ways of thinking may essentially exceed his time. It is more fair, accordingly, to judge a person later, because those of a subsequent time are unlikely to be excessively influenced by the current times, and will probably view things in a more objective manner.

Criticisms made by contemporaries are always greatly influenced by the conditions of politics and popularity of that time. For example, the outstanding poet William Wordsworth, wrote many poems concerning the scenes and events of everyday life, and the speech of ordinary people. He believed the topic of ordinary people was the raw material of which poetry could and should be made, while such poems were nothing in the eyes of the mainstream poets, who instead put much emphasis on the form of the poem. Yet, it is the poems of Wordsworth, which are strong in emotion rather than rich formation, that are highly valued nowadays.

Re-writing

Criticisms leveled at us by contemporaries are consistently prejudiced by the circumstances of politics and popularity prevalent at the time. To illustrate, the exceptional bard, William Wordsworth, penned countless poems depicting scenes and events of everyday life of his time, told in the words of ordinary people. He advocated the topic of the common man was the raw material of all poetry, whereas mainstream poets of the time put more emphasis on the structure of the verse. Nevertheless, it is the works of Wordsworth, so strong in formation rather than rich formation, which has transpired as most highly valued.
